2/14 - Theme: Teeth

Never too early to work the toothbrush on those shiny pearls. Toothbrush also makes great paint brush, use new or used toothbrush to let your little one goes wild with paint. At TWC, we use white paint (like toothpaste) and toothbrush on color paper so the little one can practice how to brush.

My girl (3 next month) picked up the Pinkalicious book on the book shelf and started flipping the pages on herself. We "read" the book 4 times (she wanted more!!). I started reading the words from the book, then 1/2 way though I describing the story page by page. The second time I "read" the book, I started asking her questions about the page. The third time I just flipped the pages, she started telling me the story. The last time, we looked for different things on the page and went off talking about something else in life that is not related to the story. It is amazing to see how much she remembered after reading it once. She actually understood the story and told me she should only eat one cupcake instead of many so she does not turn pink. So next time you read a book together with your little one, instead just reading the words, get your young one involved and let her read the story to you even if she can't really read yet.

Chinese New year

Chinese new year was last week and we made a paper lantern to celebrate.

1) take a color paper, fold in 1/2 length
2) use a scissor, start at 1" from the end, make cuts along the folded side about an 1/2" inch apart, make sure you leave about 1.5" inches from the edge
3) open the paper and glue or staple the end together
4) put a string through the top

2/9 - Valentine's Day

At the Grace Church Wed playgroup, the art craft for this week is the "stained glass" heart necklace
1) using clear contact paper, cut a reasonable size strip, cut it in 1/2.
2) tear away the contact paper backing and let your kid put little piece of streamer on it, any direction, any size.
3) once it is filled with colorful streamer pieces, put the other piece of contact paper over it
4) cut out an heart shape with a scissor
5) poke a hole in the middle and put a yarn/string long enough for necklace

1/17 Week Theme - Food

BOOK: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

SONGS & MOVEMENT: On Top of Spaghetti (click on the title for lyrics and on that page clicks on the triangle to hear the song sings) with shaker eggs.

ART TABLE: Tissue Paper Designs, Just Like Eric Carle’s at the end of the Hungry Caterpillar book.

Punch holes in tissue, glue tissue to white paper while discussing with the children their favorite foods.

SNACK: Monday is apples, Tuesday is pears, Wednesday is plums, Thursday is strawberries, and Friday is Oranges (along with parent volunteer snack).

REMIND PARENTS-

1. Scholastic Due this Friday, 1/21.

2. Please consider registering for the Cultural Pot Luck Dinner, next TH, 5-7pm.

3. Preschool Information Binder is ready for review by the map.

1/20 - Sunny day inside when it is cold

I was reading the book "No place like Space" and it mentioned about the moon does not shine, but it reflects the sun's light. I thought it is easier to explain what reflection is by showing (like a lab).

I hold a mirror (like the moon) toward the sun ray coming into the room and it reflects the light onto the wall.

Guess what, Bridget took the mirror off my hand and started to play with it. It kept her busy for a long while and now she understands what reflection is and why the moon shines. We can talk about phases of the moon later next time.

1/18 - Sewing card board

What can you do with old shoe laces when you recycle your sneakers? Yes, you can recycle your sneaker - click here to find out. Well, I decided to wash the old shoe laces and created something I saw at TWC a while back. All you need a cardboard (plenty from my recycle bin/holiday gifts), cut out a shape you like, use the hole punch to add some holes to the edges. Give the kid the shoe laces and let them poke it through the holes like sewing. You can use leftover yarn or string, you don't very long rope and tape the ends for easy handling. Have the kid do some drawings on the card if you want.

1/10 - Snow man with paper plate

Easy art work for any age! 2 paper plates, one bigger than the other. Staples together on the edge. Glue the cotton balls and any special pom pom on. (we used special one for eyes and buttons). A upside down black "T" shape for hat. I labeled a "B" on the hat for Bridget. You can put glue on the plate and let your younger one put the cotton balls on the spot.

Now let sings a song about snowman... in the tune of "I'm a little teapot"

I'm a little snowman round and fat

Here are my mittens, Here is my hat

When the sun comes out I melt away

See you next time on a snowy day

Making paper snow flake
